One of my brickwalls involves my GGGG grandfather, Walter Swain of Tewksbury, MA. While I can piece together his family, his parents & origin are a mystery. Some seem to think he was the son of Nathan Swain & Phebe Wilson born in Arlington, MA in 1776- further still, some think he divorced Abigail & married someone else...I have seen zero evidence for any of this. I do not feel like a birth for a Walter in the time period suffices as evidence, especially when there are no other connections to Arlington, MA at all. It seems to me that bad information & assumptions have just spread through unsourced online trees. Although, I will say I did not look for a divorce record yet, so I can't say if one does or does not exist. If there is evidence to any of that, please enlighten us all.
Walter Swain was born about 1771, but it could have been earlier, in New Hampshire or Massachusetts. He may have died while he lived in Tewksbury, MA, although no record seems to exist in the state. He married Abigail Kittredge b. Jan 17 1774, dau of John Kittredge & Abigail Dutton on Jun 13, 1796 in Tewksbury, MA. She died Feb 17 1844 in Tewksbury, MA. The death record available from americanancestors.org states her parents name, and in tiny letters next to that it says "son, Levi Swain". Some have made the assumption she was married & this is her husband, but it does not say she was married & it does say "son". They are on the 1800 Census in Tewksbury, Ma, but not after that. Walter dies/disappears somewhere after Jan 1802 when his youngest son, Benjamin, would have been conceived.
Their children were as follows:
1. Levi Swain He married Phebe Gowing (1796-1879) on Apr 12 1818 in Wilmington, MA and continued to live in Wilmington during their life together. They can be found on the 1820, 1850, 1860 & 1880 censuses, and likely others with some effort. Levi, or someone else notes on the 1880 census that his father was born in NH. Levi was born Feb 1, 1797 in Tewksbury, MA and died on Jan 2 1881 in Wilmington, Ma and on his death record it states his father Walter was born in Gilmanton, NH.
Levi & Phebe had: Abigail, Charles, Sarah, James, Edward, Levi Jr. & possibly others.
2. Sally Swain was my GGG Grandmother. She was born Dec 9 1798 in Tewksbury, MA and married Chadbourne Warren III on Feb 12 1817 in Berwick, ME. South Berwick town clerk & Historical Society both say: Intention to marry on Oct 31, 1816; it was certified Nov 23 & they married on Feb 12, 1817 in Berwick, Me. by Rev Thompson & she lived in Wilmington, MA. Chadbourne Warren was [edited as "possibly"] the son of Chadbourne Warren & Hannah Hodsdon born about 1785 and died May 4, 1839 in Maine as noted in Capt Elisha Goodwin’s Record Book.
Sally is a widow in 1850 and is with her daughter, Abigail Swain (Warren) Sanderson & her husband George A. Sanderson in Dover, NH. They are my GG grandparents. By the 1860 census they have all moved to Haverhill, MA & can also be found there in 1870 together. Sally passes away Oct 6, 1870 in Haverhill, MA. Her death record in Haverhill states: widow; 76yrs; consumption; her father's name is not given, but his birth says Wilmington, MA. Her mother is listed as: Sally Warren, also born Wilmington, MA but it would seem Abigail, or someone else, was likely confused by the question. No other information is given on the original record. Sally was buried in Pine Hill Cemetery, Dover, NH. The burial record says "Swain", the grave says "Warren".
Sally & Chad had: William S. Warren (1820-1872); Moses Pray Warren (1822-1896); Samuel Warren (1823-1878); Chadbourne H. Warren (1824-1909); Abigail Swain Warren (1828-1905) & Benjamin Warren (1835-1907), possibly others but unconfirmed are: Charles Warren who married Mary Perkins & George
3. William Swain b. Sept 2 1800 in Tewksbury, MA d. unknown
4. Benjamin Swain Benjamin was born Sept 10, 1802 in Tewksbury, Ma. Mar 20 1823 he lived in Reading, MA and married Asenath Trull in Andover, MA. He died Jan 10 1867 in Wilmington, MA. His death records states both his parents were born in Tewksbury, MA.
Benjamin & Asenath had Benjamin Swain Jr. (1827-1892)
