4G Ebenezer Chenery Sanderson & Mary Jane Cox
George W. Sanderson’s parents were a little more difficult to pin down in the records, and therefore until recently I was not 100% certain of the connection, but thankfully I can now prove my theory J
Let’s review what I had in the records for George W. Sanderson’s origin & parents.
Only having the above to go on for a very long time, I had to research all possible parents of George W. Sanderson. So I did, and these couple were eliminated:
Now, I don’t know where the Medford comes from, nor do I believe they lived there until she was 35, nor that she is 55, but...the fact that it ties Mary Jane, Alba, Eben & Phineas together, and that her son Rev. George W. Sanderson lived in Haverhill at the same time as this in 1876 is huge. I now feel safe to say this is absolutely the correct connection.
Ebenezer Chenery Sanderson was born Apr 8 1803 in Watertown, MA, son of Phineas Sanderson & Pheobe Chenery [xvii]. He married Mary Jane Cox on Aug 29 1824 in Watertown, MA[xviii]. I suspect she most likely was born no later than 1810 making her about 14 yrs old when George W. Sanderson was born, but have been unable so far to find her birth record or her parents. Eben & Mary lived in Massachusetts until after 1830 when he is last noted on the US Census in Watertown which shows Ebenezer C. Sanderson. 1 male under 5; 1m 20-30; 1f under 5; 1f 20-30. After that Eben completely disappears, but we can assume he lives until at least 1834, perhaps in Portsmouth, NH where his only known daughter was possibly born in 1835. Ebenezer’s death record has never been located, but it seems he passed away between1835-1840.
Mary Jane (Cox) Sanderson married second Alba Rollins in Dover, NH. “Mrs. Mary Jane Sanderson” married Alba Rollins in Dover before Sat Jan 14 1854 Portsmouth Journal of Literature and Politics. Alba had previously lived in Northwood as a young apprentice where he is noted as a runaway on Jan 7 1822 - New-Hampshire Patriot (Concord, NH) Volume: IV Issue: 2 Page: 3 “One Cent Reward! Run away from me the subscriber an indented apprentice named Alba Rollins about sixteen years of age. All persons are forbid harboring, trusting, or employing said apprentice, as they would avoid the penalties of the law. Whoever will return said apprentice shall have the above reward, but no charges paid. Miles Knowlton Northwood, Dec 28 1821”
Alba apparently survived the ordeal & was in Dover during the 1840 & 1850 US censuses. He was married previously to Elizabeth according to the published Rollins Family book and this is also confirmed by this mortuary notice on Thursday, October 5, 1843 in the New-Hampshire Patriot (Concord, NH) Volume: X Issue: 471 Page: 3 “In dover 24th ult Martha Jan daughter of Alba & Elizabeth Rollins aged 1y and 6months”. As well as this one Tuesday, January 7, 1845, New-Hampshire Gazette (Portsmouth, NH) Volume: XCI , Issue: 1, Page: 3, “1844 Elizabeth, wife of Alba Rollins died at Concord, NH Dec 12”
1842 Alba is a Hog Reever in Dover per the Dover Gazette & Strafford Advertiser Sat Mar 19 1842 Iss 181 col B. and the 1843 Directory for the area also shows him listed in town. 1845 Alba filed an intention to marry Nancy Palmer on Sep 15 1845 in Dover. The marriage date set to be Oct 1 1845 in Dover (per 1930 City of Dover Annual Report with attempts to preserve the serious lack of Dover records, marriage is in NHVR no parents listed). The marriage is also recorded on Saturday, October 11, 1845 in the Portsmouth Journal of Literature and Politics (Portsmouth, NH) Page: 3. Sadly, they were married only a short time as on Tuesday, December 8, 1846 the New-Hampshire Gazette (Portsmouth, NH) Volume: XCII Issue: 49 Page: 3 reports her death in Dover “Mrs Nancy Rollins, wife of Alba Rollins [no age]”. During 1850 Census he is listed in a boardinghouse in Dover.
In 1860 the US Census shows Alba & Mary together in Dover, NH. She is sad to be 43 b. MA and he is 55 b. NH Teamster] b. 1805-1807. By 1870 Alba has passed way and Mary is a widow in Portsmouth with their son Allen who was born in 1862. Alba’s death record at NH Vital Records states he died Sep 23 1868 in Milton, NH a63. 1871-1873 she is in the Portsmouth Directory, but 1876 she temporarily removes to Haverhill, MA as noted above, but returns to Portsmouth where she dies Mar 1, 1880 at a70 [b. 1810]. The record gives her middle initial as “S” and a mortuary notice can be found on Thursday, March 11, 1880
In the New Hampshire Patriot and State Gazette (Concord, NH) Page: 3 “ROLLINS- Portsmouth, Mar 1, Mary Rollins, 70y”
I have been unable to find what happened to Allen Rollins beyond the 1870 US Census in Portsmouth, NH.
Ebenezer & Mary had at least two known children:
[The following vital records can be found in the town stated via NEHGS or FamilySearch.org]
1. George W. Sanderson
2. Harriet A. Sanderson was born Oct 8 1835 in Watertown, MA or Portsmouth, NH daughter of Eben & Mary J. Sanderson (per a combination of marriage & death records, but birth not at NHVR) m1st: Daniel W Wright (b: 1815?) a1847-48 (no marriage found 1850). It looks like he died July 1862 a47 of dropsy b: NH marital status unknown in Bridgewater, MA.
Harriet Wright is with her 7 children by 1860 in the Watertown Poor Farm, but it lists E. as her middle initial…children: Nancy I/J a12; Frederick a12; Horace a10; Elizabeth A a8; George a7; William a 5; Caroline a3;
It seems Harriet then may have married _____Coleman between 1860-1867 but no record was found except when she married again "Harriet A Sanderson Coleman" a30 married Jan 7, 1867 in Cambridge Samuel L. Hall b: 1842 son of Samuel & Mary O. in Boston, she was b: 1837, father Ebenezer & m: Mary J. In 1870 it looks like them in East Boston Samuel Jr Hall a 33; Harriet A. Hall a36; Samuel R. Hall a12; Gertrude Hall a11; Chas F. Hall a6; Hannah O'Roarke a21 (servant) BUT in 1870 it also looks like Harriet A. Wright (a36 b: 1834) & Carrie Wright (a13) are in the Samuel & Comfort Hayes household as a servant in Madbury, New Hampshire.
"Harriet A. Wright" (b: 1837) married again Aug 18, 1881 m: Eliab Parker McIntire in No Reading. It says her 2nd marriage, but unless there is another Harriet Sanderson daughter of Eben & Mary J. it would seem this is her 4th. Anyone who knows me, knows I’m definitely not judging, just sayin’ lol. Harriet is with him on the 1880 census in No Reading as a servant. 1900 they are still in No Reading her birth says Oct 1836 10ch/5lv Married 19 years. I could not find Harriet or Caroline in 1910, and Harriet died Sept 21 1913 in Methuen; widow, no parents listed.
