3G George W. Sanderson & Abigail Swain
George W. Sanderson was born Nov 11, 1824[i] (stone) in Watertown, Ma the son of Ebenezer C. Sanderson & Mary Jane Cox [ii]. George and Abigail Swain Warren were married on July 5, 1846 in Dover, NH by Rev Dunn (Intention Jun 21 1846)[iii]. Abbie was born June 12, 1828 in Dover, NH and the daughter of Chadbourne Warren and Sally Swain. She died April 17, 1905 in Haverhill, MA[iv]. George W. Sanderson Nov 1, 1887 in Biddeford, Me, age 62y,11mo,21,days of aproplexy (grave says Oct 30 1887)[v]. They are buried in Hilldale Cemetery, Haverhill, Ma in the Sanderson-Martin plot #299 which is located in the first gate (if headed to Atkinson) down the hill to the intersection at the bottom, turn left, then it is immediately to the left.
George always refers to himself humbly as a shoemaker or bootmaker, but his grave & other sources indicate he was in fact a minister. Hilldale Cemetery says Rev. Geo W Sanderson & has placed a Veteran sticker on his grave, but he was a Chaplin to the Veterans after the war, not actually a veteran that I can find. There was another George W. Sanderson who was from elsewhere in Massachusetts & was a civil War Veteran, and I suspect my George has been confused with him. My George is list as "Chaplain, G. W. Sanderson" on June 28 1870, 71, 72, 74, on Haverhill Microfilm. He is also noted as a Chaplin in Haverhill: Foundation Facts Concerning its Settlement pg 24 for similar years.
In a death notice published in The Congregationalist, Nov 17 1887, it states: SANDERSON-At his home in Haverhill, Nov 6, Rev. George W. Sanderson, aged 63 yrs. He was ordained at Manchester, N.H. in 1875, and preached afterwards for churches in Lynn & Stratham.” The next week’s issue on Nov 24, 1887 must have garnished some complaints that he was not a Congregationalist as it states: “----Though Rev George W. Sanderson, who died recently at Haverhill, where he was a resident more than thirty years, was a Baptist Minister, he had often supplied Congregational pulpits.” It seems according to the listings as early as 1870 in Haverhill, the ordained date of 1875 in the paper is probably incorrect, but it’s possible Geo. W. Sanderson may have been appointed Justice of the Peace in Manchester, NH in 1878 per the New Hampshire Register, State Year-book and Legislative Manual, 1878.
I did see a section in a book about "Mr. Martin" which talked about his business, wife & father-in-law but it was rather inaccurate as far as George. See -----Municipal history of Essex County in Massachusetts, Volume 4 By Benjamin F. Arrington pgs 248 & 249 It states: "Mr. Martin married, in 1882, Mary Sanderson, daughter of George W. and Abigail (Warner) Sanderson. Her father, a clergyman, was pastor of a Dover, New Hampshire church, and that was the home town of the mother and their daughter, Mrs. Martin. Later, the Rev. Sanderson was for many years at Watertown." Everything italicized seems to be off a tad.
