Not that long ago I came across a deed from the 1600's that reserved the right to “such trees within his twelve acres of land as are fit to make staves whether pipe barrel or hoghead staves”
So, that set me to wondering - what are staves? Well, while I've seen many descriptions online implying that the entire barrel was a "stave", that's not accurate.
Barrels were made by Coopers, and those barrels, usually either called Hogshead or Pipe Barrels were used to hold grain, liquid, tobacco, etc. Staves are the wooden slats in the barrel.
